Beached Bird Training in Westport
The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) will be in Westport on September 13th to train interested volunteers on how to collect data on beach-cast carcasses of marine birds. The hands-on workshop will be held at the Westport Timberland Regional library from 10am-3pm. COASST is a citizen science project of the University of Washington, in partnership with state, tribal, and federal agencies, as well as environmental and community groups. Volunteers do not need any prior experience with scientific data collection, just a commitment to survey a specific beach at least once a month. The data helps address important marine conservation issues.
The workshop is free, but there is a $31 refundable survey kit deposit. It is also recommended to complete the survey in groups of two or more. Interested volunteers should RSVP by contacting coasst@uw.edu or call, 206-221-6893. Bring a sack lunch to the workshop!
